What bath exhaust fan installation costs
A bath fan swap is priced as a handyman visit plus the electrician for the connection, with the fan on the materials line. We have not billed one on the public list yet, so the finished install and fixture jobs we have billed are below for scale. A first fan in a bath that never had one is a larger job because of the new duct, the roof or soffit cap and the circuit.

What moves the price
- A swap into the same opening with a working duct is the base job. A duct that ends in the attic adds the run to a cap.
- Roof caps take a roof visit and flashing. Soffit caps are quicker and are the usual choice on a ranch or a split level.
- A fan with a light or a heater needs more switch wiring, which adds electrician time.
- A new fan where none existed brings a permit and a new circuit or switch leg, which is the biggest jump in price.

Cost questions
- Do I need a permit to replace a bath fan in Maryland?
- A like for like swap usually does not. A new fan where none existed, or a new circuit, does, and the electrician pulls it. The county decides and we check before the visit.
- Can a handyman replace a bath fan in Maryland?
- The housing, the duct, the cap and the ceiling patch, yes. The wiring connection is electrical services under section 6-101(k) and goes to a licensed electrician. On our jobs both come out together.
- Why does my fan vent into the attic?
- Because the builder stopped at the insulation. It is common in DMV houses from the 70s through the 90s. We run a new insulated duct to a soffit or roof cap so the moisture leaves the house.
How the work itself goes is on the bath exhaust fan page.
