What tile and backsplash work costs
Tile is priced by the job, not by the foot, and the price covers layout, setting, grout, sealer and caulk. The nearest finished job on our list is a bathroom sink re anchored and recaulked in DC this October for $287 with a new toilet seat. A backsplash is a two day job and the estimate carries one number for it.

What moves the price
- The tile you pick moves the time more than the wall size. Mosaic sheets and small format take longer to set and grout than subway or large format.
- A wall that is not flat gets skimmed before any tile goes up, and that is a visit of its own on an older plaster kitchen.
- Outlet boxes that need extenders bring the electrician for an hour, which is its own line.
- Tile you supply has no markup, but we need the box count and the trim pieces before the first visit so we do not stop short.

Cost questions
- Do I need a permit for a backsplash in Maryland?
- No. Tile on an existing wall needs no permit in the counties we work. Moving a receptacle does, and the electrician pulls it when a box has to move.
- Can you tile over the old backsplash?
- Rarely. Tile on tile adds thickness at the counter and the receptacles and usually fails at the edges. We take the old tile down, repair the wall and set fresh.
- How long before I can use the kitchen?
- Two days of work and a day for the grout and caulk to cure. The range can be used the day after the second visit.
How the work itself goes is on the tile and backsplash page.
