What ceiling fan installation costs
A ceiling fan install is priced as the electrician visit, with the brace box on the materials line when the old box is not fan rated, and the fan either supplied by you or added at cost. We have not billed one on the public list yet, so the finished install and fixture jobs we have billed are below for scale. Several fans in one house on one visit cost less each than one fan per visit.

What moves the price
- A fan rated box already in the ceiling is the base job. A plain light box adds the brace box and the time to set it.
- A ceiling over 10 feet or a vaulted ceiling needs a taller ladder or a lift and a longer downrod, which adds time.
- A fan with a light kit on a single switch may need a second switch or a remote receiver to control both, which is electrician time.
- A room with no fixture at all brings a new switch leg or circuit and a permit, the biggest jump in price.

Cost questions
- Is a fan rated box required in Maryland?
- Yes. The electrical code the Maryland counties adopt requires a box listed for fan support for any ceiling fan. The electrician checks the box before the fan goes up.
- Can a handyman replace a fan where one already hangs?
- The wiring is still electrical services under section 6-101(k), so the connection goes to the electrician. The handyman assembles the new fan and takes the old one down.
- Does a ceiling fan install need a permit?
- Swapping a fan or a fixture on an existing box usually does not. A new circuit or a switch leg does. The county decides, and the electrician pulls it when one is required.
How the work itself goes is on the ceiling fan installation page.
